Finance for Social Enterprise

There are various existing or ongoing efforts to collect data on the financial needs of social enterprises. These could usefully be collated and perhaps extended in order to provide a coherent picture of the demand for finance by social enterprises.

2. There are various sources and types of financial services available for social enterprises. Some of these are generic and some are specific to social enterprise. It would be useful to put together a guide to finance for social enterprise that includes information on these.

3. Institutions that are considering possible interventions (including government and corporates) would find a review of international examples/best practice useful to inform the design of their interventions.

Social BDS Working Group - NEW TOOL DEVELOPMENT

Proposed new social BDS tools :  By the end of 2010, the ILO and BDS partners aim to have developed, piloted and rolled out at least the following tools for social enterprise development in South Africa:

1. Short (0.5-1 day) training tool providing an introduction to social enterprise, with trainer development programme.

2. Social enterprise resource pack with sections including legal forms for SE in SA; SE business models (e.g. social franchising); finance options for SE in SA; income generation models for SE; scaling up SEs; partners and resources for social enterprises in SA.

3. Assessment tool for identifying potential social entrepreneurs based on personal characteristics.

4. Assessment tool to identify existing/potential social enterprises and identify needs.

5. Generate Your Social Business Idea training tool, with trainer development programme.

6. Social Business Plan Competition Handbook.

7. Diagnostic tool for growth-oriented social enterprises.

Recognising the need for this work to be strongly demand-driven and collaborative, the ILO has formed this national Social BDS Working Group (SBDSWG) that will participate in the design and development of these tools during 2010.

Social Enterprise - For profit or not?

I have noticed during various discussions held at the ASEN breakfast seminars as well as with various interested parties and relevant stakeholders that there is no consensus on whether social enterprise should be driven with a for-profit motive or not.

If so, then the socio-economic aims of the enterprise might be compromised in order to generate maximum profit for shareholders and if not, then the enterprise faces the danger of falling into the perpetually-funded "NPO-syndrome", and ending up as such (i.e. an NPO/charity).

Let's start up a discussion and see what everyone thinks of the subject.

Looking forward to your inputs.

Regards Andries
